On March 11, 1837 the Michigan Legislature approved legislation naming the western portion of Ingham County Aurelius Township. From the original township the neighboring townships of Onondaga, Leslie, Delhi, Alaiedon, Vevay, Lansing and Meridian were created. Today Aurelius Township covers 36.5 square miles and has a population of 3,525 people as of the 2010 U.S. census. According to 2016 estimates recently released by U.S. Census Bureau, since the 2010 census Aurelius Township has grown to a population of 4,299.
